When planning a vacation, destinations like Cancún, Paris, or Bali often dominate discussions. Yet, some of the most rewarding travel experiences lie in places that many overlook. These hidden gems offer unique adventures, rich cultures, and unspoiled beauty without the overwhelming crowds.

One such treasure is Cuba—a country often misunderstood yet filled with charm, warmth, and resilience. Having visited Cuba three times—twice in Trinidad and once in Varadero—I’ve been captivated by its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and the heartfelt generosity of its people.

Cuba: A Hidden Gem Waiting to Be Discovered

For many travelers from Montreal, Cuba often comes with preconceived notions. Some hesitate to visit, thinking of it as nothing more than an affordable beach destination with mediocre food. But my experiences have shown me that Cuba is so much more than that—it’s a country that invites you to look beyond the surface and discover its soul.

    1. The Timeless Beauty of Trinidad

Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage site, feels like stepping into a different era. The cobblestone streets, pastel-colored colonial buildings, and lively town squares make it a magical place. During my two visits to Trinidad, I was enchanted by its charm and the sense of life and culture pulsing through the streets.

    • Music and Dancing: The evenings in Trinidad were unforgettable. The town square comes alive with traditional Cuban music, and locals and visitors alike gather to dance under the stars. Sitting on the steps of Casa de la Música with a mojito in hand, surrounded by the rhythm of salsa, I felt connected to the beating heart of Cuban culture.
    • Exploring the Countryside: Beyond the town, Trinidad’s natural beauty is breathtaking. Horseback rides through the lush Valle de los Ingenios and visits to waterfalls were highlights of my stay. The warmth of the local guides added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience.

    2. Playa Ancón: The Perfect Beach Escape

Located just 12 kilometers from Trinidad, Playa Ancón is often referred to as one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba. Its calm, clear, and turquoise waters create the perfect setting for relaxation and snorkeling.

During my visits, I spent hours admiring the coral reefs and colorful marine life. The peaceful environment, free of large crowds, made it feel like a personal paradise. The sunsets over Playa Ancón, painting the sky with vibrant hues, were magical moments that will stay with me forever.

    3. Cayo Macho de Afuera: An Exotic Island Getaway

One of the most extraordinary experiences in Cuba was visiting Cayo Macho de Afuera, a small island near Trinidad. This secluded paradise, accessible by boat, feels like stepping into another world.

    • Crystal-Clear Waters: Perfect for snorkeling, the waters around Cayo Macho de Afuera teem with marine life. Swimming alongside colorful fish in this pristine environment was an unforgettable experience.
    • Flamingos and Iguanas: The island is home to exotic wildlife, including flamingos and iguanas, adding a touch of adventure to the visit.
    • Untouched Beauty: With its white sands and lush greenery, Cayo Macho de Afuera offers a slice of Cuba’s unspoiled natural beauty.

Spending a day here felt like living in a dream. The serenity, combined with the chance to connect with nature, made it one of the highlights of my travels in Cuba.

Is the Food in Cuba Really That Bad?

One of the most common criticisms I’ve heard about Cuba is its food. But my own experience couldn’t have been more different.

Traveling through Cuba, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of its people, despite the country’s limited resources. How could a nation where people live with so little offer such generosity and joy? It made me reflect on the cultural gap between myself and some of my fellow travelers from Quebec.

For me, eating out—even in simple settings—is a privilege. It’s an opportunity to connect with others and share gratitude. Yet, I noticed that some of my friends were quick to complain, even refusing meals for minor reasons like the sight of an insect. This cultural difference was a powerful reminder of how our habits and expectations shape our perceptions.

Yes, Cuban food might not match the standards of industrialized countries, but it is alive with creativity and resilience. From ropa vieja to freshly caught fish and tropical fruits, every dish tells a story of a people who make the most of what they have. The true essence of Cuban cuisine isn’t in its perfection but in the human connection it fosters.

    Breaking Misconceptions About Cuba

It’s easy to dismiss Cuba based on surface-level criticisms, but the country offers so much for those willing to explore beyond the resorts.

    • Misconception: “Cuba is just for beaches.”
Reality: Cities like Trinidad and Havana offer rich cultural experiences, while the countryside boasts stunning landscapes like the Viñales Valley.
    • Misconception: “The food is bad.”
Reality: Cuban food reflects the resourcefulness of its people, with dishes that carry deep cultural significance. Dining in Cuba is about more than taste—it’s about sharing an authentic experience.

    Why Visit Cuba?

Cuba is a destination that challenges your perspective, offering not just a vacation but a journey of connection and reflection. Whether you’re exploring the coral reefs of Playa Ancón, walking through the vibrant streets of Trinidad, or discovering the untouched beauty of Cayo Macho de Afuera, every moment invites you to appreciate the simplicity and warmth of this incredible country.

For those looking for something more meaningful than luxury or convenience, Cuba is an experience that will leave a lasting mark on your heart.
